[track 5 of 8 from my album 'Opinionated']

Remember that thing that indiscriminately harmed people around the globe? And that there are still millions of lives ended or affected in some way? A novel contagion of this caliber was a once in a lifetime event. Especially this lifetime because it happened during the existence of video calls, movie streaming, live newsfeeds, and microwave ovens. Ironically, all these conveniences hindered our preparedness to sit down and shut up. Basic math says we could've avoided a lot of the drudgery, but hardly any action was taken in the most critical moments when the virus was first discovered. So here we are now. Many of the rich afforded complete safety, or turned a profit off of exploiting the circumstances, while the rest of the population needed to learn how to live with it or die.

We can only hope this pandemic taught some people how to be emotionally mature. But I think even more people just bottled up their dismay and are now unleashing it in various, unsympathetic manners.

Got this randomly recommended in my feed and I'm absolutely impressed. This kind of unresting key changes and nervous instrumental are insanely hard to pull off while keeping them "predictable" enough to not cause cognitive overhauls. The alternating 5/4 - 3/4 signatures are so well hidden I did not even notice them changing in the first place. I love this kind of stuff because it's a tell into how good a composer is. It's probably what I'd hear in a Pat Metheny or Brad Mehldau album. Good job :)

Wow wow wow wow. Wow. This is just incredible. The instrumentation is insane. The whole track is just so rich and excels in texture and the feeling it wants to portray. Genuinely some of the best work on new grounds i have seen. I strive to have the creativity. Also, what DAW do you use?

ZipZipper responds:

Thank you so much! I use Logic Pro X, and all of the synths + percussion are sourced from soundfonts already in the software.

Doesnt really sound very Covid like

Hey! A friend sent me this track and I enjoyed it; here's what I wrote back about the music and its appeal.

"It's interesting how on the second listen the abrasive qualities become less surprising and you can hear all the other little details. The call and responses between the parts, cool rhythms/time signature changes which are repeated just enough. Some beautiful jazz chord progressions here too. I took a few minutes to figure out some of them; 0:24-0:35 it's Fm9, Dbmaj7, Am#11. 2:29 it's Bbmaj7, Gm9, Abmin-maj7. Super pretty and unique."

In the end the things I'm calling "abrasive" here (meaning a number of unusual dissonances and sounds) aren't really abrasive at all. It grows on you and eventually it all just sounds cool. Great work.

bro this is fuckin awesome
