About a week ago I had a dark dream. It wasn't quite a nightmare, but it wasn't far from either. One might call it a... Lucid Shadow Dream.

I wish to invite you into that dream, sonically. This experience is best enjoyed in darkness, with headphones. You do you though, of course.

This piece also includes several real recordings of mine, from this past week. I think that's enough said. I hope you hear something here you might not have heard before!

Dark indeed. I love the foreboding atmosphere at the beginning and the gritty bass drone. Very evocative sound design here - :26 sounds like I’m listening to the wind chimes on grandma’s front porch while on LSD (the drug, not the musician). The dark brass and thunder clap at 1:03 felt like a good way of progressing the piece beyond the abstract, bell-like textures of the first minute. The mood and progression of this track remind me of “Vos Postergum,” an old piece of yours that I still listen to sometimes. The skin-crawling descending phaser at 1:30 is great, and the spidery, pulsating synth at 1:44 and the eerie E-piano blend really well together. Rather incredible sense of pacing here, Alex. Sometimes I wish you had threaded the brass throughout the structure of the piece a little more - as it is now, the triumphant riff at 2:44 feels a bit out-of-place. Still, I like how you brought the piece full-circle with the bass drone and ambiance. Overall, this is an ambient beauty with some stellar sound design and a ton of variety! Keep it up, Lucid. ^_^ Also, for what it’s worth, I just want to point out that I’ve heard you make the “the dream is a Lucid Shadow Dream” joke both in real life and on the internet now. I laughed both times. :)

Haha, I'm very positively surprised that you still remember Vos Postergum!!! This is definitely a similar genre. One that doesn't always do so well in competitions, but it's what I was inspired to make, because of my dream. Honestly, I wish I had time/reason to write more ambient music.

I've always appreciated your vivid descriptions! Please keep going with those ^___^

In retrospect, I agree that the second time the brass comes in, I could've worked harder on translating that idea and contrast. It's a bit sudden, and not only in a good way!

My Logic, Tainted or not, tells me I should always let Lucid Shadow Dreams in through The Door! :6

Well enjoyed with lights off, for sure! But I need to type or I'll lose my place

Where the brass comes in, controlling those attacks is imperative, lest they twah twah. Think I would appreciate a thicker ensemble there -- moving individual midi notes back so that they begin to sound where it suits your down beats will do the trick for the first problem -- see 1:10

Insane sound design

I think this would fit great in cinematic, as it very much sounds like a film score

Only wish it were longer. I could listen to this for ... 8 minutes single play. Realistically speaking, for an entire movie

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Sorry for the late reply! I've had a crazy year. Thanks for listening with the lights off <3

I agree 100% about the brass. I also think it should be a bit less quantized. What I normlly like to do is delay compensate so that the instruments hit in the beat! I won't be too hard on myself though, as I wrote this during my honeymoon, on a laptop xD

I'm so happy you appreciated the sound design! That's definitely where I placed most of my effort for this piece :3

Yoooooo this is amazing sound design!!! I just listened to it in a quiet room with the lights off, in complete darkness and DAMN what an experience. Good luck on the competition!!

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks so much, dude, and for your great sportsmanship. I honestly thought I wouldn't win with this track, even if I like it, because it's so weird :'D
Especially as I really liked your entry!
