In terms of my scores...
I'm the kind of guy who can often find things to like about tracks, but it's hard to really, sincerely impress me. As a result, I gave out a lot of 6s, 7s, and low 8s. I awarded only FOUR scores that were 9 or above. If my overall score for you was above an 8.5, congrats! Feel good about yaself.

I'll follow suit. While I won't review or PM everyone my thoughts, I generally feel the same way. I prefer to throw support at artists, just starting out, as encouragement can make a lot of difference.

I have responded to a couple of PM' s - attempting to explain my scores for your tracks. I can assure you, that i spent a lot of time with each track. Once I started placing numbers, as I went down the list, my standards would curve with the gradient of musicianship. I often went backwards to either lower or heighten a score after more listens...

Where I would prefer to encourage every positive aspect of a musicians' piece, this is a competition and I had to compare it to everyone's piece, in the spirit of competition.

So if your piece didn't receive a score you agree with, feel free to PM me. I will do my best to break it down for you, however, you must allow for a tad bit of bluntness, when it comes to the competition portion of the score.

Otherwise, I listened to some pretty phenomenal music, for underdogs. Thanks for that experience.

Do you think it would need subgenres? It's kinda weird with podcasts because there could be a lot of subgenres - people may be better off just tagging their podcast with terms they hope will attract people. We could launch as a single category and feel it out over time for subgenres.

200mb is huge. Our radio show/podcast was an hour long. Files were a respectable 70mb only and still high quality. I also think you might be late to the podcast train...

But multiple categories would be a must. Sub genres would be daunting, but labels would be more helpful after main categories.

I'd be interested to see where this would go. However I think more and more people like video stuff more..youtube etc.

If it flies, though, I'll definitely contribute!!

Response to: Why are Films scored after Editing? Posted December 26th, 2014 in Audio

Hmm. I can only give you info from my perspective.

I just finished scoring a film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3400058/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm

https://www.facebook.com/thesheltermovie

I kinda made sure I was in the know, from the beginning, so I could create and keep with the feel and knew what direction I would be going.

Otherwise, I would have received the film after the final edit and "ready, set, GO!". Time limit. Anywhere from two weeks to two months. Which is hard for musicians trying to make it and still balance a life.

For example, in my case, I have a full time job, wife, 3 kids under 12, band etc...so to just drop everything, for a few weeks/months would have been impossible. So the process I was in, was my solution and lasted about 6 months, but was not obtrusive in my life. I still fell within the time the writer/director needed me to be complete. And not obtrusive to him, either.

For my comfortability and time, I asked for the script, before it was even filmed. Just to get a general feel for the flick.

I was sent bits and pieces of scenes, once the filming was complete. Before it even hit the editing floor.

I made a bunch of project files that were "ideas" of the scenes.

When I started scoring for "real", I wound up getting 9 very different versions of the film, as time progressed, anyways. I definitely learned a lot about the process.

But, scoring is usually one of the last things done, because of the way scenes can change, through editing. Pulling and editing scenes AFTER the scoring is done can sometimes take away the feels, too. Especially if the musician is no longer on the "payroll", so to speak.

I should mention, that we did this, via the internet. I'm in B.C. Canada. The movie was filmed in USA. Writer/director lives on the other side of the country. We met "face to face" only a few times over "facetime". And all my stems were given to the editing company (in the states) on line....

So I guess, the process is usually done at the end, because the film is already the way (mostly) that the directors/writers etc want it. Our job, as musicians, is to make sure we accentuate and deliver those vibes, through music, to those who are too thick to understand the flick without music. hahaha.

I think, if I were able to do it for a living, that I would still do it, (if I were the selected musician) by asking for the script, seeing and writing to bits and pieces of the movie, before the real score. Just so I have the connection already. Going in cold, might not work for me. But, who knows. This is my first full score. Hopefully I'll do more and understand it further and provide better info to questions like these.

Cheers mang.

Response to: Composer for feature horror film Posted October 22nd, 2014 in Audio

I agree. Don't do SOME shit for free. Especially if the "friend" is demanding musicians and instruments of a caliber, that said musician had to pay out his nose for the skill and sound.

However, a legit job is a legit job. The first one is ALWAYS free...haha. Unless you are already established. You don't really get to just work on big budget films because some dude liked your shit on Newgrounds. (Well maybe....)

Not that I am cutting the musicians here. I have made HUGE connections in the film industry, through my radio show and play ONLY newgrounders music, (because you all AWESOME) in hopes that one of those movie types, visits here and snags one of you, for their project.

That said, your first job will be free. Or at least in small parts.

IF "friend" is legit, this is an alright opportunity....however, he is GOING to get what he pays for.
It reminds me of bar owners that try to hire bands by saying.." Hey, I'll get you exposure, and a $50 bar tab for the band. That should be awesome for you"....well it isn't.

We lug thousands of dollars of gear to your shithole, drink $50 booze (like one drink each per band member), play for an hour + and entertain YOUR guests, (most of which, came with US), after practicing for months on end.
Free. NO. Our time is not free. But we can be bargained with.

I sat around not getting a check for at least six months, maybe more, playing almost every weekend. Apparently the PROs are making a play for relevance as the top-down model of labels and promotional engines is being replaced by a bottom-up model where bands establish fan bases that have to be assembled together like a quilt to create a listening fanbase for a mover-shaker lable or radio outlet. I'm quite sure I'm getting a bigger slice because unregistered bands aren't claiming their chunk of the money leaving more in the pot for people staying on top of their paperwork. We are definitely in a very weird period where record labels and radio stations are broker and more irrelevant than ever, but the listening audience needs some sort of gatekeepers to keep from being washed out in a wave of unlistenable "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" music so labels and radio stations are still very secure as gateways to turn to for music references. Now it's the quality of the artists that makes the labels, as opposed to the late-70s-early 2000's years where artists were a dime a dozen and could be screwed over with impunity.

Maybe the day when you can make a living as an independent artist is not too far away after all... that being said, I blew the whole check on repairs to my van, which it did not come close to covering.

I wish there was more focus in this forum about making money with original music at live events, but apparently most people find the prospest so depressing/intimidating they don't want to talk about it.

Agreed.

That fan base quilt are the people who will pay for the events. The promoters can be shoddy and unless a big organized festival, you are at the mercy of the "doorman's" competency to collect the money from a live event. Hence, the reason for things like SOCAN, BMI etc. It seems live music is the best way to get 'real time' paid. Even if it did take you 6 months.

My biggest gripe is a bar/pub owner saying " I'm giving you exposure and a $50 BAR tab, why should I pay you a minimum of $400 for your band?"

"Um because 4 professional musicians are bringing a quilted audience (of everyone they know) to get hammered in your house, which is where you make the biggest money. We haul thousands of dollars worth of gear, set up, tear down and sometimes bring our own goddamn sound guy to work with your shitty sound system so we don't sound like idiots and people keep coming to hear us play"

I live in a shitty little town, though, so maybe those are more 3rd world problems. hahaha.

The best I can do, especially for newgrounders, is play the shit out of their songs on my radio show and hope some movie industry people are paying attention. There can be some loot there. ish. (so far just a lot of work)

How many "bands" are there on ng? Not just basement studio one dood playing everything...but full on bands? We should start a forum chat about experiences and tips and such...I'm old, I think you (FUNKbrs) are old too :P, but hopefully we are still "cool" enough to help younger bands move forward!

However, I recently recieved a 250$ check from BMI for royalties on live performances.

That's rad!

In Canada, if you are registered with SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) and fill out their insanely complex forms, you get looked after as well. Bars, pubs and venue holders have to pay a specific fee to SOCAN to hold events and they usually look after their musicians. This also covers radio play as well, as stations submit their play lists hourly.

For me and my music under "Bad Man Incorporated", my music is protected from someone else making money through copyright infringement. But I allow "Free Use". As "Bad Man Incorporated". Especially since ALL my "bad man" stuff is uploaded here.

My "real name" and band is registered to make money. We are still swimming through our membership, but SOCAN still keeps track of $ owed, while our stuff is played on radio and we do live events. (so I was told by a SOCAN rep).

It's a great idea, if you are trying to make money, with your music. :)

But If people are that shallow, their musicianship didn't mean anything in the first place or they don't take it as seriously as they could. Newgrounds definitely isn't the end all and be all for musicians. I've just always found it very helpful and do my best to return as much advice as I've received, to be a better musician.

The audio is shoved 2/3's down the FP. The only people that generally look are the other musicians. If they can make it passed the games and movies..haha..But I'm positive some decent thought goes into the audio FP....especially in the last few months. Been some great tunes there...

Either way, I guess I'm just gung ho to help people get more recognition. There are soo many great artists on Newgrounds, they are harder and harder to find, without sifting through mountains of gross stuff.
