to me the things that make a video game console great are the form factor, library, and overall user experience. i cant really speak from any experience with pre 6th gen systems but i would say the playstation 2 almost exclusively for its library of games. the user experience is also very simple and while the system itself isnt anything spectacular to look at i think the all black aesthetic worked well for it.

its so upsetting how a console on launch can run smoother than shit off a ducks ass and then after 5 years its become enshittened in advertisements and niche but cool features that are barely accessible
Sounds like the xbox 360 in a nutshell? As I thought it was weird they kept adding advertisements on the front of it as well as... Explain to my why does a console with a paid internet access feature need ads in front of it? Was the xbox doing that horribly? Greedy f*';!?ers.
Great games, but that OS was a smack in the face. The ps3 was slow, but fast for the time and genuinely it was the blueprint for later systems.
ps3 interface even today runs at a perfect 60fps. i hated the updated store interface more than life itself because its horribly slow and conforms to the ps4 storefront. xbox used to have such nice dashboards too

jedi fallen order. it was good but i hate unskippable cutscenes and that game is loaded with them.

I love those Y2K dotcom era clusterfuck designs. That plug for the official website in the PS2 version of FFX's start menu is juuuust distracting enough.
this is my favorite part of ffx on ps2. it managed to seep its way into movie promos as well in the 90s. the matrix trailer, united artists logo before the bond movies, every movie poster ever from the 90s onward.
playstation 2 obviously. best games and psx backwards compatibility to boot.
gatekeeping. plain and simple.

i think its a fun concept if a bit redundant considering games have always tracked progress already. the bragging right is fun to have though and having the goal of wanting a platinum trophy in a game you love is enough motivation for me as is. plus having adhd and needing a constant challenge compounds that

this is a real tough one because i wanna say lady tremaine because im rewatching cinderella on tv rn but im gonna say cruella de vil (the REAL cruella not those impostors (sorry glenn close))
resident evil 2 and 3 are good contenders but id say that metal gear solid, castelvania symphony of the night, and silent hill are among the best looking games on that console. mgs and sh prioritized "realistic" art styles but because the psx was made in the infancy of 3d graphics on home consoles they look distinctly different from other consoles at that time. i love how mgs tried to render reflections in some areas of shadow moses, even if the effect is few and far between and its kinda obvious how it was done. silent hill for its fog obviously but also its stellar lighting effects in some of the darkest areas of that game and the other side having some incredible textures. and symphony of the night for its blend of 2d sprites and 3d models interacting and giving a new level of depth to the levels.
horrible game but it has some all time best tracks for the series
i couldnt get into the witcher 3 but i also never really gave it much time to decide if i really liked it or not. the souls games however ive tried plenty times to get in to them starting with dark souls 3, then bloodborne, demons souls remake, and then elden ring. the exploration in these games are done better in symphony of the night and the soundtracks never really impressed me. ill give it credit for some direction choices like not forcing you to engage in the story and having controls that are really responsive which is something more games should strive to do (but would rather focus on realism which is boring). bloodborne has a nice aesthetic at least.
ive considered buying one a couple of times but after testing some of my favorite games using my brothers steamdeck (mgsv, re5, and some other) i decided against it because it feels awkward to use and i cant see myself actually using it anywhere other than my own room. same thing goes for the ps portal which ive also considered but that one has the issue of being a cloud streaming device which is a huge turn off. there are plenty better portable consoles for me that are pocketable and tick more boxes for what im looking for but unfortunately the steam deck isnt one of them. im happy that it seems to be doing well for valve though and that people are enjoying the system.

i wish for the love of all that is holy on goshs green earth i could remember the name but it was a paint program for windows pcs in the early 2000s that would use voice clips whenever you selected colors and such. i distinctly remember a feminine voice saying "cyan". im certain it isnt kid pix but that i suppose that is a program that would be considered obscure nowadays.
