I may be the next Slim Jim mascot! Posted June 18th, 2015 in General

So I got home from work and proceeded to get intoxicated the other day when I saw on Facebook that Slim Jim was doing a contest where they would plaster your photo on the side of a damn space shuttle advertising their products. I quickly opened photoshop and whipped up the photo you see below. After lots of attention on their page, they started contacting me privately. I'm about to sign my likeness over to them, and if all goes to plan I may be contracted for a commercial or other possibilities. Remember the guy in the Slim Jim outfit back in the day? And of course Macho Man. I could be the NEXT Slim Jim mascot!

Bought weed at a retail shop! Posted January 4th, 2014 in General

This is certainly an experience. Living in Colorado, we passed Amendment 64 last year where marijuana would be legal for any adult 21 and up in the country where you could have possession, retail sail, and transportation within Colorado borders.

I stood in line for about 30 minutes behind a bunch of excited people, and when it was my turn standing in front of 60 jam packed jars of weed the guy said "Welcome to the adult Willy Wonka land!". It was magical :) I bought an eighth of Mr. Pink, two pre-rolls and a gram of Durban Poison. The customer service was fantastic as well, and the tax money is going to schools.

Texas has their oil, Colorado has their weed...
God Bless America!

Hey Newgrounds! I recently purchased a Wii U (The ZombiU Deluxe Bundle), and wanted to start my friends list off with people here on NG.

Add me, or list your name and I'll add you! Mine is:

Haha, the first response was pretty accurate.

Even before weed was legal, and especially now since it is, you'll be tokin' the worlds best bud. Skiiing/snowboarding the worlds best mountains, visiting some of the prettiest sights.

The only thing that Colorado has to worry about now is an influx of college stoners and hippies flocking to Colorado and Washington to light up the tree and get higher than the Rockies, but that's somewhat more tolerable than gun-toting cartel members slinging dope.
Honestly? I don't know what it's like at Colorado universities now, but not much is going to change in Washington state in terms of people smoking pot because pretty much everybody already did.

Since I moved to the west coast and lived in both seattle and vancouver, I have never seen more people casually walking down the street with joints in their hands.

I second that in Colorado. People out here don't turn their head twice to weed, everyone does it, almost every person I know.

I can't imagine this years 4/20, oh my god.

Decriminalized, still have to go to court/get a fine/go on record.

Cop can't even take your bag now, and you can drive with it if you're just transporting and not using.

Marijuana Is Legal In Colorado Posted November 7th, 2012 in General

That's fucking right, Newgrounds!

I voted Yes on Amendment 64 which legalizes any Colorado Citizen over the age of 21 to grow 6 plants, possess/transport 1 ounce, consume, and sell at retail all things marijuana. Including Hemp.

..................

AND IT FUCKING PASSED.

(You can thank my vote for ending prohibition for the rest of the country, just as Colorado did 80 years ago for alcohol before the federal level)

That's the most important part about all of this. Many states have proposed but failed, but if Colorado is indeed the first (and by the looks of it, things are looking up) it will no doubt be the stepping stone to full legalization across the country.

If any state is going to legalize and regulate Marijuana, it's most likely Colorado this year. There is more support a week before final results than any other time in history.

I live in Colorado, and I voted YES to Amendment 64!!!

Colorado has to be the first step, I've lived here for 3 years and let me tell you it's already the Amercian Amersterdam. The best quality herb on the planet.

IN A COUPLE WEEKS I CAN GET A PACK OF MARLBORO GREEN AT SEVEN ELEVEN, OH MY GOD.

Response to: Colorado: Vote Yes On Amendment 64! Posted October 24th, 2012 in General

Right now it's showing the population is 50/50 on the matter, and it's leaning towards passing.

I don't know if you live or have visited Colorado, but if I had to put my money on it if it's ever going to pass it's this state.

Smoking marijuana in Colorado is essentially the same as cigarettes, no one turns a head twice. There's more dispensaries than Starbucks and it's wasting tax payers moneys for stupid crimes every day. Cops have given up usually pursuing marijuana charges in most instances.

I think it's going to pass, everyone I know is for it.

Colorado: Vote Yes On Amendment 64! Posted October 24th, 2012 in General

If you live in the state of Colorado, early voting stations are available now or you can request your mail-in ballot.

Colorado is proposing to legalize Marijuana and regulate it like alcohol in a couple weeks, here is the bill:

Amendment 64

When you vote yes on Amendment 64 in Colorado, you're eliminating the #1 reason why people enter the black market. With marijuana regulated like alcohol, there would be no reason to risk your ass and be exposed and introduced to other worse things the black market has to offer. Marijuana will never go away, never has, and has been wasting tax payers money for petty crimes related to it for no end. Let's help fix this state's debt, and let law officials focus on more important crimes. Vote yes on 64!

It seems the competition I'm in requires me to use this format. Can I do it in Adobe Premiere Pro or do I have to download another converter?

Adobe Premiere has some fantastic export options. File, Export, and then there are multiple drop downs for file formats. H.264 is a version of an MOV file, however I don't think you want to go with VOB unless you're having a physical DVD made.

VOB is the video codec for DVDs after you've burnt them, it's meant to be read from DVD players. If you want this file, just burn a DVD through any burning software. Otherwise, I'd say H.264 is a really good one to go with quality wise.

I'd much rather use a steady cam or track to move in on a subject rather than zoom.

Response to: Video Production Club Posted August 15th, 2012 in Clubs & Crews

Frank, you have good stuff man.

About zooms and long shots, I believe they can be done if it works well. For example the zoom in your date video is a common zoom that works, or zooms on interviews that are super slow to bring out drama, or even zooms in post production on certain shots to bring you closer. What I mean in general is don't go zoom happy, I've seen hundreds of videos through the years misusing zooms and zooming in on almost anything. Need a center of focus and not just going wild.

I also agree with long shots if the production quality is good enough it will hold the viewers attention.

Nice, Jack. Your video quality is pretty good as well.

What I would suggest from you in your next project is more camera angles and cutaways when the camera sways. Enough practice and you're going to have an awesome piece :D

Haha, oh man you got me. In the past few months I swore off sunglasses, too risky in shoots. Happened a couple times actually.

About your equipment, as long as you can frame shots good and do good editing camera quality isn't everything. Look at movies like Pi for example, dirty as hell but still engaging. You have a major advantage with some good lenses, I won't lie, but still. Lighting is the most important part of the whole process if you're shooting indoors.

Necessity is the mother of all invention, my friend. Cheap props and effects are secondary to good script writing though. Watch enough B movies from the past century carefully, and shortcuts will avail themselves.

I have 2 books from the mid 20th century which has some excellent optical tricks that can reduce or eliminate the need for fancy videographic software, so I'll scan n post some helpful pics here soon.

Good luck with the script and pre-production. Keep us up on your progress :3

Practically all the equipment I use is rented from college. Things like Canon 550D's (I much prefer shooting with DSLRs), shoulder mounts, jib arms etc. They also have old Sony PDs but they're horrific to use with the computers.

My preference in software is Sony Vegas Pro 11, and I plan to start using After Effects soon as my friend can get me started on the basics of it.

This is the short film I made as a final project for my college course, the idea started off as an advert for Rock Band, but it turned into just a music video really. Still, I'm very proud of it and it helped me get onto the next level of my course, so I should be making more films in the near future.

I love making music videos myself, and I love how everything was synced up. I even did a project very similar in college using the Rock Band drum set so you're right at home!
I loved the effects of the side pans with them glistening.

Never turn away from a hobby or dream, we all share a unique interest that can be hard to achieve sometimes. There is lots of competition, but this is a site of creativity.

I love how people still have VHS stuff around, I wish I still did. In school I shot on MiniDV for a couple years, but then switched to digital. I like to shoot on SLRs now.

Some of my current equipment that makes a basic production:
Canon 7D
Compressor (my computer throws up trying to render raw 1080)
Adobe Premiere (I used to use Final Cut, but prefer this now)
Adobe After Effects
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Soundbooth or Garageband
Zoom Audio Recorder
Fluid Head Tripod
Shoulder Mount

I aim to purchase a steady camera mount. My friend has a really good one that he got for around $120.

I live in Colorado, and I'm very much proud of the weed here. Ask anyone who's visited or lives here and they'll say it's the best on Earth. On average its 25-30 for an 8th, hundred for a half ounce (you can sometimes even get an ounce for 100 at dispensaries). Legally if you have your card you can hold up to 2 ounces at any given time. Damn I love this state.

Video Production Club Posted August 3rd, 2012 in Clubs & Crews

This is a club dedicated entirely to the production of visual media through the use of cameras and software. I'm a very strong supporter of Newgrounds adopting a video portal, dedicated entirely to video production outside of the Flash Portal, that is similar to sites such as Youtube or Vimeo... but with with YOU guys, Newgrounds.com, showing off your talents to your fellow NGers and the world.

RULES:
- Serious video submissions that the user(s) put effort into.
- No bullying, trash talking, or any other form of bringing another artist down.
- Have fun, dream big, and bring together a Newgrounds Production Crew.

Post links of a short video you've done that had the elements of pre, pro, and post-production in which members of this club will share together.

I graduated college with an Associate of Applied Science in Video Production, and here are some tips that will save your 10's of thousands of dollars if you're serious about making movies or shorts:
Attempting Towards Professionalism
- High Definition, at least 720p. This is your first step towards being representable.
- Good use of sound. Not just soundtracks (which you totally should use from the Newgrounds Audio Portal, and credit them accordingly), but decent levels for your dialogue. Test your actors levels, make sure the meter is recording in the 0 to -6 portion that glows green. You can always turn dialogue down, but it sucks to try to fix it. Have your soundtracks at a good level without spiking as well, and when you cross mix dialogue and soundtracks make sure to gently fade the latter so it doesn't overpower your actor's dialogue.
- Color Balance. White balance your camera every time the light changes. It is incredibly important and separates you from the rest. Most video editing software has different forms of color correction (i.e. Channel Mixer, Brightness/Contrast, etc.). Have a feel for what you want your video to look like and stick with it.
- Framing and Patterns. Ever notice how every movie and television show you've ever watched (or at least now you will) always have eyes of the subject in the upper thirds of the screen? They do that because audiences tend to look at the top of the screen more than anything else. A badly framed shot subconsciously annoys people, and if you throw bad audio into the mix you have lost a viewer. Basic patterns you can do with your actors to make shots intriguing and add more depth are known as A, I, and L patterns. Examples: A pattern would involve three actors standing or sitting in the shape of an A, I pattern would be a conversation between two people (think a chess game), and an L pattern could be three people again but say one person is at the end of a table and 2 others are sitting side by side on one of the sides, creating the shape of an L. You will see everything I just said if you look at anything you watch from now on, try and name patterns and think out your own shot structure. All of this makes clever use of small space and important over the shoulder shots.
- Do not use zooms. It is unprofessional unless it has an absolute purpose.
- Good shot techniques separate you from the amateur. Always have eyes in the upper third, don't drag on a shot too long, have plenty of shot variety. You can't expect to shoot an entire scene in one shot, you need multiple angles to complete it. Some Master Scene Style Shooting involves filming the shot in its entirely with a wide angle, and filming it again with mid shots and close ups for each actor.

There's just a grain of salt to have, through the future of this thread we can discuss more techniques. Q&A, and problem solving anything video related. Here's to the dedicated who love this art form.
