I'd say the main problem with scores has nothing to do with honesty of the voters. It has to do with the fact that quality has nothing to do with wether or not poeple like it; or even wether or not poeple think it has quality.

This also applies to people voting down a piece because they //don't// like the subject, but are actually impressed by the art.

nah, what i'm saying is that even if poeple look beyond their opinion; they still don't know quality. The only way to validate someone's criticism is to see if you agree with it; but if that is the case you might not have needed the criticism. And on the other hand someone might have a valid point even if you don't see it as such.

I don't think we should stop voting on how much we like a subject- subject is just as much a concious art choice as composition. A trite or boring subject can be overcome by an inventive and original approach, but I'll still consider subject matter as a factor in my estimation of a piece.

But yeah, it definitely shouldn't be the only factor.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up the notion of people voting based on the author of the submission.
I've seen some authors submit works that aren't as good as their other pieces and still get high scores just because of the name attached to it, and I've seen some others submit works that are way better than the rest of their stuff but it gets a low score because they've been associated with poor work.

That's called life, mate. If you can find a way this doesn't happen, you basically are the Lord and Saviour himself.

So I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but this is going on right now and I felt like y'all should know...

Read that yesterday, it's a good read.

========================
IMG Tags
You may notice that when new users post stuff in the forum, they occasionally go straight for the IMG tags because they're used to using them in other forums.

This is my query: why doesn't NG support them?

I used to think it was way of avoiding dead links, but with the implementation of Youtube videos embedded into posts, I can't see that this is an issue. Also it would eat less (albeit negligible) server space, and it would be easier to string together multiple images in a single post.

I'd make a thread in WiHT, but I'd rather get some opinions here first before I make a water-tight suggestion.

The embedded youtube video is a new feature which came with the redesign, so I figure they've been kicking around the concept of embedded img tags too.
It would get around the one image per post issue, but maybe they want to prevent people spamming hundreds of images in a single post in the general forum?

I was thinking about the resizing.
at the moment we have some pretty strict limits on the file size and dimensions. Would using tags allow us to get around those constraints causing both larger file size, thus eating up more server space/bandwidth, and bloated threads with images the will shoot far off to the right of a page making scrolling problems?

just my thoughts is all...

You can still place restrictions on dimensions with img tags, I believe.

And in any case, there is no chance that such a thing would eat up server space because they require you to host your picture on another site.

Pretty sure that's the reason right there. While it would make things MUCH easier for us here in the art forum, it could become extremely annoying for folks in the general forum. It's just another way people can spam shit.

That said, I don't know if there might be a way to code it so you can only use so many IMG tags in a post. If that's something detectable, it could just stop you when you hit "post" and say "YOU CAN ONLY USE 3 IMG TAGS" or something like that.

It would be nice if it supported it though, especially when trying to post pictures of work that exists in the real world, which usually benefit from photos from multiple angles (3D work) or from a few detail shots (paintings/drawings/etc).

Welcome! We love new peoples!!

If you want more views, make yourself a 'Showcase' thread here. You can post WIP's, links to your finished portal stuff or just random doodles that aren't 'portal worthy'. People are more inclined to check out the rest of your work if you give them a visual sample to entice them! ;)
